DESCRIPTION
Chest; China, first third of the twentieth century.
Camphor wood lacquered in red.
Measurements: 48 x 71 x 46 cm.
The body of the trunk is made of camphor wood, appreciated for its durability. Its surface has an intense red lacquer, the structure is rectangular, sitting on a molded base with discreetly curved legs, which elevate the whole and give it a sense of lightness. The metal hardware, arranged in the central lock and side rings, shows elaborate craftsmanship; the stylized shield-shaped lock serves as both a functional and ornamental element.
The front and corners of the trunk are decorated with carved and gilded appliqués, depicting auspicious and symbolic motifs, such as dragons, phoenixes and characters of longevity and happiness.
