DESCRIPTION
Possibly Lakshmi; India, 19th century.
Patinated bronze.
Measurements: 7 x 3,5 x 2 cm.
Bronze statuette of a Hindu deity, probably the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune. It depicts a figure with hands clasped in prayer or reverence (anjali mudra). The figure wears a headdress and appears to have wings or a winged headdress, which could suggest a representation of Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu, or a form of Lakshmi as Vishnu's consort.
The treatment of the bronze reveals meticulous and devotional workmanship, with a patina that evidences the passage of time and ritual use. More than a simple ornamental piece, this sculpture was conceived as an object of domestic worship, intended to promote meditation and spiritual meditation.
