"Crucifixion".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 22 x 16 cm; 27 x 32 cm (frame).
Baroque representation of Calvary, with Mary Magdalene embracing the feet of Christ, the Virgin in turn embracing St. John on the right side of the cross, and the Roman soldiers on the left. The painting exhibits the stylistic characteristics of the Flemish school (in its plastic attention to the clothes, brightness and glazes), as well as the expressive pathos (using chiaroscuro) typical of the Baroque period. It is worth mentioning the inclusion of a white horse as a narrative counterpoint: it could be interpreted as an element of imperial authority (horses were used by the centurions), but at the same time it is associated with purity and the loftiness of the sacrifice. In the biblical tradition, the white horse is one of those of the Apocalypse.
