The inspiration for this work came from a trip Julio Galeote made to China. The interaction with Asian culture led him to explore aspects of its translation through a contemporary and western language. In this particular case, he focuses his gaze on the offerings that the Chinese people give to their dead. The living pay tribute to their ancestors by burning valuables, any kind of material goods that represented them in life. The video simulates the transitional space of the journey of the paper offerings, from the burning process to the moment they are received in the afterlife.
This work from the Ghostly desires series is part of an installation consisting of 10 separate videos, in which the 3D portraits of each object, created through the process of photogrammetry, have been choreographed in repetitive motion as if floating. A complementary installation of paper offerings extends the project with a series of vitrines, where some of the exhibits physically float in the air. The videos starring different objects recreate aesthetic characteristics of the commercial exhibition.
Galeote's works are developed within the practice of photography and installation. All his images are constructed, adjusting the scenographies of the installations to accentuate the relationship between reality and fiction. He has exhibited his work in several prominent institutions, such as The Photographer's Gallery (London), Christie's (London), Tabacalera (Madrid), Centro Centro (Madrid), Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), MACUF, Museo Portugués de Fotografía (Oporto), Centro de Arte Alcobendas (Madrid), and in numerous commercial galleries in both solo and group exhibitions. He has participated in national and international fairs such as London Art Fair, ARCO, SWAB, MadridFoto, Estampa, PHotoEspaña, Encontros da imagem and Fotofestiwal. Julio has received grants and residencies at the Spanish Academy in Rome, Transvisiones Miami, La Filature, and has been selected in competitions such as Circuitos de Artes Plásticas de la Comunidad de Madrid, INJUVE, Concurso de Fotografía Purificación García and FreshFaced + WildEyed, among others. His work is part of public and private collections.
