Bodegas y Viñedos Alión is the result of various experiences that Bodegas Vega Sicilia had been developing since the mid-eighties, and its first wine was released in 1991. Alión has almost 100 hectares of vineyards, all of them of the tempranillo or tinto fino variety, almost all of which are planted in goblet vines except for 12 hectares that are trellised. Around 20% of the vines are more than twenty years old and are used entirely for winemaking. On the other hand, of the rest of the grapes, only those that reach at least ten years of age are used in each harvest. With Alión, the Álvarez family wishes to demonstrate that Vega Sicilia, the legendary Ribera del Duero winery, can make 21st century wines, which at the same time display all the characteristics of their peers in the Denomination of Origin.
