The costumbrista characters of Josep Juliana represent popular scenes and moments of daily life, especially inspired by rural and Italian environments. As a 19th century costumbrista painter, he was more interested in portraying human types and popular traditions than in delving into the individual psychology of the characters.

Spanish painter who began his training under the tutelage of José Serra y Porson at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Later he moved to Italy, where he lived for several years in Rome and Naples, ascribed to the Neapolitan pictorial school. In 1866 he took part in the Fine Arts Exhibition of Barcelona with two paintings of costumbrista theme, A cloister and A rabbit and several birds, and in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of Madrid with Oxen in the meadow, which obtained the third medal. The Prado Museum has a painting of Italian theme, with which he won a third medal in the National of 1892.
