DESCRIPTION
Small Grand Tour tripod gueridon, 19th century.
Bronze with green patina.
Measurements: 27 x 16 x 16 cm.
This vessel is a faithful reproduction of a Roman jardinière whose prototype, originally discovered in Pompeii, is now preserved in the Museo Nazionale di Napoli (L. Pirzio Biroli Stefanelli, 1990). The jardinière is intricately decorated: the upper frieze, ornamented with bucrania and leaf garlands, is bordered by a lotus motif in relief. The entire piece rests on a tripartite base from which emerge three sphinxes with claw feet.
