BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Set of three tables of the late nineteenth century.
With Grenadian inlay.
In walnut wood, with marquetry of various hardwoods and inlaid bone and mother-of-pearl.
Measurements: between 49 x 41 x 37 cm (the small ones) and 52 x 64 x 56 cm (the biggest one).

Set of three side tables, consisting of a larger table and two smaller identical side tables. They are a remarkable example of the Alhambra or Neo-Mudejar cabinetmaking that flourished in Granada during the second half of the 19th century.

The inspiration in the architecture and decorative arts of the Alhambra is evident: in the use of geometric forms (octagonal panels and star-shaped chambranes), the presence of openwork arches as a structural and decorative element, and above all, the inlay decorating the top and the crossbeam.

The panels are profusely decorated with inlays of fine woods of different tones, bone and mother-of-pearl, creating complex patterns of inlay and stars. The structure is of a walnut wood, while the inlaid decoration uses a variety of fine woods and materials to achieve chromatic contrast.

The larger table features an intricate inlay design that starts from a central starred medallion and expands into an intricate network of lacquerwork. The edge is topped by a fretwork of sawtooth or triangles of bone and dark wood, a detail of great refinement. Just below the tabletop, instead of a plain skirt, we find a series of openwork poly-lobed arches. They connect to each other, creating an architectural lattice effect.

The six legs are joined by a lower shelf, also octagonal and decorated with inlay, which repeats the motif of the upper tabletop in a more simplified version and provides structural solidity.

The smaller tables are also octagonal top, and with similar inlaid decoration to the larger one, demonstrating the unity of the whole. Each side of the octagon is formed by an openwork horseshoe arch, a direct reference to Islamic architecture. The fretwork is clean and perfectly defines the silhouette of the piece. They also have an octagonal lower shelf decorated with inlay, giving coherence to the overall design.
