BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

French school of the 16th century.
"Portrait of Anne de Montmorency."
Oil on cradled panel.
In need of restoration.
Measurements: 65,5 x 50 cm; 83 x 67 cm (frame).

Painting of half a body that represents with sobriety and dignity the famous French noble and military Anne de Montmorency, key figure during the reigns of Francis I and Henry II.

The character appears in a dark and neutral background, which accentuates his solemn presence. He is depicted three-quarter length, with his face turned slightly to the left and his gaze serene but firm, conveying authority and self-control. His gray hair and beard reflect the maturity and experience of the sitter, while the facial features, treated with precision and restraint, reveal the austere elegance of Renaissance French courtly portraiture.

He wears a black velvet robe, adorned with a golden chain from which hangs a medal, and a rosary or series of vertical pearls on his chest, details that evoke both his rank and his religiosity. The white collar, characteristic of 16th century fashion, contrasts with the black of the dress and the silver tone of the fur cloak, a symbol of nobility and high status. On the head she wears a black hood with metallic or embroidered ornaments, in keeping with the French courtly fashion of the mid-16th century.

The oval frame accentuates the sober and concentrated composition of the portrait, while the lighting emphasizes the texture of the face, beard and fabrics with moderate naturalism.

The style of the portrait reflects the combined influence of French Renaissance portraiture and Flemish and Italian models, which sought to represent the individual with a balance between physical realism and noble moral idealization.

Overall, the painting conveys the authority, prudence and dignity of a great statesman, characteristics of Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567), Constable of France and one of the most influential figures of her time.
