DESCRIPTION
Spanish school of the early nineteenth century.
"Child portrait".
Oil on canvas.
Restored. It has two patches on the back.
Measurements: 63 x 44 cm, 75 x 56 cm (frame).
Spanish infantile portrait made around 1810-1820, stylistically linked to the Madrid school and close to the models developed by Agustín Esteve and Zacarías González Velázquez. The work represents a seated girl dressed in red, on a dark background, following the tradition of the domestic and bourgeois portrait of the early nineteenth century influenced by the environment of Francisco de Goya.
The composition stands out for the sobriety of the background and the delicacy in the treatment of the face and clothing, where details such as the coral necklace, lace and red shoes provide an intimate and elegant character. The use of warm tones and the restrained expression of the figure place the work in the transition between the late neoclassical portrait and the first Spanish romantic sensibilities.
Due to its formal and technical characteristics, the painting can be related to the circle of portraitists active in Madrid during the decades after the War of Independence, within the portrait tradition inherited from Goya and his environment.
