Berthold Oehlwein was a German painter specialized in marine scenes, sailboats and representations of the naval world. He was born in 1869 in Orlishausen and died in 1926 in Kiel, a city closely linked to his artistic production.
His work focuses mainly on North German and Baltic seascapes, with special attention to sailing ships, regattas and scenes of yachting. He also cultivated depictions of storms and seascapes of great dynamism, where the movement of the water and the atmosphere play a fundamental role.
Although he is an artist little studied from the academic point of view, his presence is constant in the international auction market, where his works are valued for their descriptive character and their connection with the German seafaring tradition of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
