DESCRIPTION
Anthropomorphic figure, African tribal art.
Ivory Coast, 19th century.
Volcanic stone.
Measurements: 53 x 30 x 27 cm.
Figure carved in volcanic stone, a material whose porosity and rough texture give the work a telluric character and a great expressive force. The figure is shown with his hands raised to his chest or face, a gesture that can be interpreted as one of prayer, respect or protection. The forms are rounded and robust, with a wide pelvis and short, solid legs, suggesting stability and, possibly, concepts related to fertility or connection to the earth. In the Ivory Coast, various cultures such as the Baulé, the Senufo or the Dan have produced statuary for religious or social purposes. This type of figures used to represent ancestors, nature spirits or deities, and were used in altars to bring protection, health or good harvests.
