DESCRIPTION
Lucerne. Rome, 1st - 3rd century AD.
Terracotta.
Condition: complete piece, with partial loss of engobe and deposits typical of its age.
Measurements: 10 cm long.
Roman terracotta lantern with elongated body, front spout and elevated rear handle. The decoration is organized in a simple way, with the central disc perforated for the oil supply and a lateral border of small incised motifs or in relief, which provides ornamental rhythm to the surface.
The skylights were essential elements in the Roman world, used to illuminate private, funerary and ritual spaces. Their interest lies not only in their practical function, but also in the diversity of shapes and decorations that reflect the tastes and habits of imperial society.
