DESCRIPTION

Sideboard furniture; China, early twentieth century,
Jumu (elm) wood.
Measurements: 73 x 117 x 48 cm.
This sideboard furniture from China, dating from the early twentieth century, is made of jumu (elm) wood, a species highly valued for its strength, its expressive grain and structural versatility. It is a rustic piece, whose formal sobriety and constructive solidity reflect the functionality and durability typical of traditional domestic furniture from the rural areas of the north of the country.
The sideboard has a sturdy rectangular structure, supported by four quadrangular legs joined by lower crosspieces that reinforce the stability of the whole. The front is divided into two pairs of hinged doors, hinged with wrought iron fittings that retain their utilitarian character and provide a discreet decorative accent. The flat surfaces of the top panel and front panels are devoid of carved ornamentation, underscoring the material honesty of the design and the natural beauty of the wood.
The finish, with a dark, uniform patina, suggests the use of lacquers or stains that, in addition to protecting the surface, give the furniture a deep hue that highlights the texture of the jumu. This type of sideboard used to be used in the domestic environment as storage furniture for dishes, utensils or textiles, combining practicality and aesthetic sobriety.
