DESCRIPTION

Pair of cornucopias; France, Restoration period, c. 1830.
Mercury gilt bronze, Baccarat glass, rosewood and fruit marquetry.
Measurements: 27.5 x 14.5 x 20 cm; 24 x 13.4 x 18.5 cm.
This pair of cornucopias is an example of the decorative taste that characterizes the first half of the 19th century. Each piece features a cut glass cornucopia, whose undulating, translucent forms evoke abundance and sophistication. These rest on a finely chiseled bronze base, which features ram's heads, an ornamental motif with classical roots linked to fertility and prosperity.
The wooden base, enriched with marquetry of plant motifs, introduces a material and chromatic contrast that balances the lightness of the glass with the structural solidity of the whole. This dialogue between transparency, metallic luster and decorative richness responds to the aesthetic ideals inherited from late neoclassicism, already softened by a more ornamental taste of the period.
Beyond their decorative function, these cornucopias reflect a moment of transition in the French decorative arts, where the classical tradition is combined with a growing interest in domestic luxury and technical virtuosity. They are, in short, pieces that embody the style adopted by post-Napoleonic France.
