Lionel Royer was a French painter of the late academicism, pupil of Cabanel and Bouguereau, known mainly for his historical scenes - as Vercingétorix surrenders to Julius Caesar - and idealized portraits, although he also cultivated elegant feminine figures; He participated in the Franco-Prussian War before training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, won second place in the Prix de Rome (1882) and developed a successful career with outstanding commissions such as the frescoes of the basilica of Domrémy on Joan of Arc, in addition to collaborating as an illustrator and commentator in publications of his time.
