DESCRIPTION
Handcrafted armchair. Hungary, 1970s.
Oak wood and cognac-colored woven leather.
Measurements: 90 x 54 x 40 cm; 44 cm (seat height).
This piece is a magnificent example of the applied arts design of Hungary in the 1970s, where folkloric tradition meets the functionality of the modern movement. The armchair stands out for its strong sculptural character and material honesty.
The frame is built in oak wood, turned into cylindrical shapes that soften the robustness of the piece. The undisputed protagonist is the thick cognac-brown leather. The seat features a checkerboard braiding that adds texture, while the backrest is a solid piece of suspended leather, attached to the vertical posts by a decorative leather cord at the edges.
The chair evokes the aesthetic of campaign or safari furniture, but with the solidity of domestic brutalism.
The piece visually dialogues with the designs of Ecuador's Angel Pazmino (famous for embossed leather and tropical wood structures), sharing that fusion of vernacular/rustic and mid-century modern.
