Devreese began his training with his father, the sculptor Constant Devreese. He later studied at the Kortrijk Academy and then settled in Brussels, where he continued to study at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts between 1881 and 1886. In 1884 he settled in Schaerbeek, a town he did not leave until 1939, where he founded his studio, which was built for him by another reputed friend of his, the architect Victor Horta, with whom he collaborated on more than one occasion. From very early on he was considered an outstanding medallist and is in fact regarded as the renovator of the genre in Belgium, something that has obscured the rest of his production, as he was also a great portraitist and the author of numerous monuments.
