This gilded copper plate is characterized by virtuosity in the embossing, close to the technique of "rilievo schiacciato", a Renaissance mode of execution that uses subtle layers of different depths on a flat surface to create effects of perspective and depth, resembling painting. Developed primarily by Donatello and Lorenzo Ghiberti, this style uses extreme variations of relief, from figures with more volume in the foreground to barely incised backgrounds. The subject, putti with pitchers in a wooded setting, alludes to the late French Baroque period.
