DESCRIPTION
Spanish school of the XVI century.
Saint praying.
Carved wood.
Measurements: 42 cm (height).
Figure in carved wood of half bulk, representing a male figure with long hair and bearded. Dressed in a tunic with a belt and a long cape, it could represent a saintly character. Although it dates from the 16th century, the survival of medieval art is evident in this carving, visible in the frontality of the piece and the hieratism of the character.
This type of figures were common both in altarpieces and as independent figures. In the present case it is possible that the carving was part of a sculptural group (Déesis, Crucifixion, etc.) or that it was in a niche of an altarpiece in an isolated way.
