DESCRIPTION

JULIEN CAUSSÉ (France, 1869 - after 1914).
"Figure."
Marble.
Signed.
Measurements: 82 cm (height).
Born in the French town of Bourges, Julien Caussé developed his career between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He trained in Paris, as a disciple of Alexandre Falguière, and exhibited from the end of the eighties at the Salon des Artistes Français, being awarded a third medal in 1893 and an honorary mention in 1900. He also participated in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1900. Specializing in small ornamental sculptures, his favorite subject was always the female figure, worked in a style that oscillates between classicism and Art Nouveau. His figures represent mainly allegories, characters from classical mythology and nymphs, made mainly in bronze, although there are also some examples in terracotta. In the case of this lamp Caussé represents an elegant lady, dressed in the fashion of the first half of the nineteenth century, warming her feet next to an ornate brazier. The light would be diffused from the brazier, and the electric cord would exit through the hole in the back of the base.
