Sculptural portrait of Jean Mermoz made by Fred C. Focht around 1925, an exceptional example of the concepts that ruled Art Deco sculpture at that time: movement, modernity, sports boom and artistic innovation. The work represents the famous French aviator by means of a bust of strong expressive tension, in which the raised face and the gaze directed upwards underline his heroic and pioneering dimension.
The treatment of the bronze combines a naturalistic modeling of the face with a composition of allegorical character, marked by aerodynamic forms and staggered planes, elements that allude directly to the universe of aviation. The greenish patina accentuates the volumes and adds visual depth to the piece.
Frédéric C. Focht trained with the sculptor Falguière and soon gained recognition at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he exhibited at the age of 21 and received a Medal of Honor. Fascinated by the link between the human figure, speed and modern machines, he developed a production especially linked to the Art Deco imaginary of aviation and technical progress. His bronzes from the 1920s and 1930s are among the most significant creations of this aesthetic.
