DESCRIPTION
Bench following models of the sixteenth century; Northern Italy, nineteenth century.
Carved wood.
Measurements: 126 x 85 x 56 cm.
This bench, made in Northern Italy during the 19th century following 16th century decorative models, is a remarkable example of Italian historicism applied to the decorative arts. Carved in dark wood with an extraordinary ornamental richness, the piece of furniture recreates the exuberant language of the late Renaissance and Italian Mannerism through a complex sculptural composition of monumental and fantastic character. The backrest presents a refined architectural structure decorated with putti musicians, scrolls, military trophies and masks, crowned by an animal head of strong sculptural presence. The meticulousness of the carving and the variety of ornamental motifs reveal a profound knowledge of Italian Renaissance decorative repertoires, especially those developed in Lombardy and Venice during the 16th century. The openwork decoration of the backrest also provides visual lightness and a marked sense of scenography.
The lower structure stands out for its dynamic and theatrical forms, enriched with fantastic figures, claws, scrolls and grotesque masks that recall the Mannerist ornamental universe inspired by Italian engravings and court furniture. The seat, also carved with geometric and vegetal motifs, is evidence of the craftsmanship and technical quality of the execution.
