Unlike the rigid forms of the previous style (Neoclassicism), Art Nouveau is characterized by the use of curved lines, organic forms and the integration of art with nature. The way the figure reclines on the rim of the bowl, merging with the structure of the object, is a hallmark of this current.
The reclining figure, possibly a representation of a nymph or a female allegorical figure, was an extremely popular motif in the Belle Époque. They were used to add a poetic and romantic dimension to everyday objects.
