San Joaquín is represented as an old person with a cane in his hands and Santa Ana is represented with her green mantle that makes reference to that she carries in her bosom the hope of the world and a book in her hands that we can suppose that it is with which she teaches to read to the Virgin Mary.
Saint Joachim, according to Catholic and Orthodox tradition, was the husband of Saint Anne and the father of the Virgin Mary and therefore the maternal grandfather of Jesus Christ. The story of Joachim and Anne first appeared in the apocryphal Gospel of James.
