DESCRIPTION
Novo-Hispanic school; second half of the XVIII century.
"St. Joseph with Child" and "Pietà".
Oil on copper.
It has a XIX century frame.
Measurements: 8 x 6 cm; 17 x 15 cm (frame).
Oil on copper that is painted on both sides and in both cases with devotional scenes. In one of the sides we can appreciate the theme of Saint Joseph with the Child, which reached a great popularity during the Counter-Reformation, while in the other side we can observe a piety at the foot of the cross. Although in different images, the author tries to transmit the ideal of Christian family, being thus the protagonists of the scenes Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph.
It is worth mentioning that, during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianizing the indigenous peoples. The local painters were modeled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of types and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and the triangular virgins, however, in the early years of the 19th century, already in times of independence and political opening of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity.
