The composition responds to a simple and stable pyramidal scheme: the figure of the Virgin, seated and slightly inclined towards the Child, concentrates the light focus on her face and hands, creating a visual axis that leads the gaze towards the intimate act of breastfeeding. The dark background, barely suggested with a slight lateral landscape break, intensifies the recollection of the scene and refers to the tenebrist approaches developed in Italy after the irruption of Caravaggio's naturalism. The directed lighting, which models the volumes by means of strong hallmarks of light and shadow, reveals a clear assimilation of chiaroscuro as an expressive and spiritual resource.
From the stylistic point of view, the work combines naturalism in the anatomical treatment of the Child, fleshy body, spontaneous and truthful attitude, with a serene idealization of the Marian face, with soft features and low gaze, which emphasizes its contemplative character. The chromatic range, dominated by the traditional blue and red of the Virgin's mantles, reinforces both the Marian symbolism (purity and royalty) and the emotional intensity of the scene. The nimbus subtly indicated around the head accentuates her sanctity without breaking the intimate tone of the whole.
The pictorial execution, noticeable in the loose brushstrokes and in certain areas of more synthetic modeling, suggests an execution that privileges the devotional effect over meticulous detail, a frequent trait in the Italian production of the Seicento destined for private environments. In this sense, the work is part of the tradition of images of domestic piety, conceived for individual meditation and prayer, where the tangible humanity of the figures favors the empathy of the faithful.
