REINIER DE LA HAYE ( The Hague, Netherlands, 1640-1 Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1695).
"Portrait of a lady".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Signed.
Measurements: 47.5 x 38 cm; 52 x 42.5 cm (frame).
The lady wears a luxurious red silk dress whose satin surface is carefully worked, capturing the reflections of light through wide and undulating folds. The contrast between the intense red of the dress and the pearly white of the sleeves and lace underlines the quality of the materials and the social position of the sitter. The pearl necklace and the discreet earrings complete an image of sober distinction, in keeping with the ideals of virtue and decorum of 17th century Dutch Protestant society. The pose, with one hand resting on a table decorated with sculptural relief and the other delicately gathering the cloak, combines naturalness and symbolic representation. The table and the classical architecture act as attributes of culture and moral stability, while the dark drapery frames the figure and directs attention to the face, treated with particular delicacy. The expression, serene and restrained, responds to the portrait ideal of psychological capture without excessive theatricality.
De la Haye's artistic context places him in the heyday of Dutch bourgeois portraiture, at a time when economic prosperity boosted the demand for private images intended to affirm identity, status and family memory. A member of the St. Luke's Guild in The Hague from 1662, later active in Utrecht and recognized as a master in Antwerp, the painter knew how to integrate local and international influences, shaping an elegant and cosmopolitan style.
Trained since 1660 as an apprentice of the portraitist Adriaen Hanneman, and deeply influenced by Caspar Netscher, De la Haye adopted a pictorial language characterized by the softness of the modeling, the chromatic refinement and the meticulous description of fabrics and lace. In the present work, the female figure is depicted half-length, seated before an architectural background with a column and drapery, elements that evoke nobility and stability. The open landscape in the background, bathed in twilight, expands the space and gives atmospheric depth to the scene.
