This delicate representation of the Virgin and Child is part of the Spanish-French pictorial tradition of the late seventeenth century and early eighteenth century, a time of stylistic transition in which the full Baroque begins to soften its dramatic intensity in favor of a more intimate and devotional sensibility. The work responds to an iconographic model of wide diffusion in the Catholic sphere, conceived not so much for large altarpieces as for private devotion or for convent spaces, where the emotional closeness with the image was fundamental. The composition shows the Virgin in a serene attitude, holding the naked Child on her lap. The maternal figure slightly inclines her head towards the viewer, establishing a direct and affectionate relationship. Her oval face, with a clear complexion and sweet expression, refers to idealized models of both the late Baroque Spanish school and certain French circles influenced by Italian devotional painting of the 17th century. The Child, of soft anatomy and rosy flesh tones, appears in a naturalistic posture, with a slight body twist that dynamizes the composition.
From the stylistic point of view, the work shows a correct and careful workmanship, although it does not correspond to the hand of an identified great master. The brushstroke is relatively smooth in the faces and looser in the drapery and background. The technical quality suggests a painter trained in a workshop, familiar with consolidated models and with the circulation of devotional prints that served as a reference. This type of production was frequent in the artistic circles of Seville, Madrid or Paris, where first-rate artists coexisted with secondary workshops that supplied a constant demand for religious images.
