The painting is part of the iconographic theme of the Holy Trinity, specifically in the variant called Compassio Patris or "Compassionate Father", a typology that reached wide diffusion throughout the fifteenth century in Europe. This visual formula proposes a profoundly emotive representation of the Trinity, emphasizing not only its theological dimension, but also its affective and devotional charge.
From the compositional point of view, the work presents God the Father enthroned and characterized with pontifical attributes, among them the papal tiara, which reinforces his supreme authority. He holds in his lap the inert body of Christ after the crucifixion, establishing a visual parallelism with the iconography of the Pietà. Above both, on the right, is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, thus completing the Trinitarian representation through a vertical arrangement that hierarchically articulates the three divine persons.Technically, it is an oil on copper that presents characteristic features of Flemish art: meticulous attention to detail, rich textures and a careful treatment of light that helps to intensify the drama of the scene.
