The genre of the navy acquired a remarkable relevance in the Spanish painting of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, in a context of artistic renewal and search for national identity. This theme, centered on the representation of the sea, ports and coastal scenes, was linked both to the romantic tradition and to the realist and impressionist currents that influenced Spanish artists of the time. Painters such as Joaquín Sorolla, Emilio Sánchez-Perrier and Aureliano de Beruete found in the marine a privileged space to explore the effects of light, color and atmosphere, turning the seascape into a vehicle of plastic modernity. In addition, this genre reflected symbolic aspects of the nation, such as its naval history or the vital link with the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, thus consolidating itself as a key theme in the visual construction of Spanish modernity.
