DESCRIPTION
JOSEP MARÍA TAMBURINI DALMAU (Barcelona, 1856 - 1932).
"Portrait in profile.
Watercolor on paper.
Signed in the upper right corner.
Measurements: 37 x 26 cm; 58 x 42 cm (frame).
Delicate feminine portrait, in which the figure appears wrapped in a warm range of pink and ochre tones that contrast with the dark background, while a small floral still life in the foreground provides a chromatic and decorative accent to the composition.
The loose and atmospheric treatment of color, together with the sensitivity in the psychological capture of the model, place the work within the tradition of the intimate portrait of the early twentieth century.
Josep Maria Tamburini was an outstanding painter and art critic of Catalan modernism. He began his career in history painting and anecdotal realism, later evolving towards a symbolist language influenced by Pre-Raphaelism. He achieved recognition as early as 1888 with a silver medal at the Universal Exposition in Barcelona and received other outstanding awards in 1898 and 1911.
He was a professor at the School of La Lonja, a member of the Board of Museums of Barcelona and co-founder of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia. His work is preserved in institutions such as the MNAC.
