DESCRIPTION

LÉON EUGÈNE AUGUSTE ABRY (Antwerp, 1857-1905).
"Barracks", 1888.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
With the inscription and date: "Fort Wijnegem, 1888".
Measurements: 142 x 171 cm; 179 x 210 cm (frame).

The work depicts the interior of an infantry barracks at Fort Wijnegem, part of the Antwerp defensive system built between 1860 and 1864 by Henri Alexis Brialmont. Abry moves away from the military epic to focus on the daily life of the soldier: a moment of rest around the stove, where the figures converse, read or remain absorbed, in an atmosphere of intimacy and recollection.

The composition, of large format, is articulated by means of a loose brushstroke and a palette of warm tones that reinforce the human and observational character of the scene. This approach, close to costumbrismo, gives the work a remarkable documentary value, especially when representing an enclave that no longer exists (demolished in 1959).

A painter trained at the Antwerp Academy, a disciple of Nicaise De Keyser, Abry specialized in military scenes influenced by his family environment -his father was a general-. He actively participated in Belgian artistic life, being a member of the Société royale belge des aquarellistes and co-founder of the "De XIII" group. His work, based on direct observation, is a unique testimony of military life in Belgium at the end of the 19th century.

Works by the artist are kept in the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique (Brussels) and in Flemish public collections.
