TOMÁS MORAGAS Y TORRAS (Girona, 1837 - Barcelona, 1906).
"Orientalist scene".

Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 21.5 x 30 cm; 34 x 43 cm (with frame).
Orientalist scene, in line with the Hispanic tradition initiated by Mariano Fortuny. The composition presents a group of figures and horses in an architectural environment of North African inspiration, resolved with a warm palette of ochre that wraps the scene in a suggestive atmosphere. The treatment of the horses stands out, executed with ease and naturalism, as well as the characterization of characters that provide narrative richness.
Tomás Moragas was trained in Barcelona, where he studied at the Escuela de La Lonja with Claudio Lorenzale and Pablo Milá y Fontanals, coming into contact with artists such as Tapiró and Fortuny himself, with whom he shared a period in Rome. After his stay in Paris, he developed an outstanding teaching work in Barcelona, being the founder of the School of Watercolorists and professor at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi. His work is preserved in important institutions such as the Prado Museum, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the MACBA or the Museum of History of Barcelona.
