Alfredo Opisso was a true master in the representation of horses. Here, animals are an integral part of rural work. Their anatomy, though suggested by the shadows, conveys a quiet strength. The scene is constructed by means of a great chiaroscuro. The light entering through the arch in the background illuminates the horse's back and cuts out the human figures, creating an almost scenographic depth.
Alfredo Opisso was part of one of the most important sagas of Catalan art. Son of Ricard Opisso, he had his first exhibition in Barcelona in 1921. In 1944 he won the National Prize for drawing at the Barcelona Biennial, and in 1958 the first prize for drawing Ynglada-Guillot. He also participated in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, in the Museum of l'Empordà in Figueras and in the Museum of Valls.
