The composition is structured around a central channel through which several boats advance, flanked by industrial docks, metallic cranes and port structures that rise vertically on the horizon. These slender, angular silhouettes dominate the profile of the scene and evoke the dynamism of European ports during the process of industrial modernization.
The artist constructs the space through an open perspective that directs the gaze towards the bottom of the canal, where the cranes and masts multiply in a succession of vertical lines that contrast with the horizontality of the water. The boats in the foreground, with their robust forms and dark volumes, act as compositional anchors that balance the scene and reinforce the sensation of port activity.
From the technical point of view, the work is characterized by a loose and gestural brushstroke, visible on the surfaces of the water and the sky, where greens, blues and ochers are mixed in rapid layers that suggest reflections and movement. This pictorial treatment privileges the atmospheric impression over descriptive detail, bringing the work closer to the post-impressionist and expressive tendencies present in European painting in the first half of the 20th century.
