Eric Detthow was a Swedish painter linked to post-impressionism and one of the most active Scandinavian figures in the Parisian art scene between the wars. Trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he belonged to a generation of Nordic artists who found in Paris the fundamental center of aesthetic renewal during the first decades of the 20th century.
Settled in the French capital in the 1920s, Detthow managed to integrate quickly into the most prestigious artistic circles of the city. He was elected a member of the famous Salon d'Automne, one of the most influential institutions of French modern art, where he regularly participated in its annual exhibitions and became part of the selection committee. His recognition within the Parisian environment was also reflected in the organization, in 1929, of a retrospective exhibition dedicated to young Swedish painting at the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris, an exhibition that contributed to the international visibility of contemporary Scandinavian art.
The relevance of his career is also confirmed by the presence of his works in prestigious international collections, including the Contemporary Art Society in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in New York. Although today his name is less known than that of some of his French contemporaries, Eric Detthow occupies a significant place within the Nordic post-impressionism and the wide network of international artists who made Paris the great artistic laboratory of European modernity.
