French sculpture in neoclassical style, of remarkable workmanship. It represents a Greek woman in pensive attitude. It could be the poetess Sappho, who in the nineteenth century used to be represented as a dreamy and intelligent young woman. She wears a flowing tunic that falls in natural folds, emphasizing the relationship between art and aesthetics in the Hellenistic world. On her head, she wears a simple but refined diadem, symbolic of her position as a figure of cultural importance and associated with her divine inspiration. She is seated on a low chair with claw feet and palmettes, following the Louis XVI style. The beaded necklace completes her refined image. Her facial expression conveys serenity and emotional depth, as if she were reflecting on the creation of poetry or on the amorous and existential themes that marked her work.
