Georges Van Der Straeten was a Belgian sculptor of the Belle Époque, specialised in busts and ornamental figures of small format, made mainly in calamine and bronze. Particularly famous were his busts of elegant ladies inspired by Watteau's models. He trained as a pupil of Jef Lambeaux, whose studio he entered in 1882 after leaving his career as a lawyer. The following year he settled in Paris, and between 1885 and 1912 he exhibited regularly at the Salon. He also took part in the Universal Exhibition held in the French capital in 1900 and was awarded a silver medal. In 1903 he was made a knight of the Legion of Honour. He is now represented in the Musée de Maubeuge, as well as in numerous private collections.
