José Luis Alonso Coomonte was one of the most outstanding sculptors in Spain and a fundamental figure of contemporary art in Castilla y León. From a young age he showed interest in art, influenced by his family's craftsmanship. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and completed his training in Paris.
Throughout his career he worked with materials such as wood, iron, stone and glass, developing an innovative style that combined tradition and modernity. He achieved international recognition in 1960 when he won the Gold Medal at the Salzburg Biennial of Sacred Art.
In addition to being a sculptor, he was a teacher and trained numerous artists. His work is present in public and religious spaces in different Spanish cities. In 2020 he received the Castilla y León Prize for the Arts in recognition of his entire career.
He died in 2025, leaving an important artistic legacy that made him one of the most representative figures of contemporary Spanish sculpture.
