Ramón Muriedas was a Spanish sculptor born in Cantabria in 1938 and died in 2014. He is one of the most recognized artists of contemporary figurative sculpture in Spain.
He trained initially as a ceramist and later as a sculptor, developing his style with influences of realism and the so-called "sculptural magic realism". His work focuses mainly on the human figure, especially everyday scenes with families, women and children, treated with great sensitivity and expressiveness.
Among his best known works is La madre del emigrante (also called "La Lloca del Rinconín"), a bronze sculpture located in Gijón that has become a symbol of public art in Asturias. He also made numerous pieces installed in museums and public spaces in Spain and abroad.
Throughout his career he won national and international awards and his work is part of important collections, such as the Reina Sofia Museum.
