Ricard Sala is a sculptor of exceptional talent who, alongside contemporaries such as Margarita Sans Jordi and Enric Galcerán, embodies the renewed interest in figurative art that took root in the 1930s and flourished during the second half of the 20th century. Sala also combined his artistic practice with teaching, eventually becoming a full professor at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts between 1971 and 1975. He was also a member of the Santa Isabel de Hungría Academy in Seville (1977). Ricard Sala began his training as a student of Antonio Sagarra, also receiving instruction from Lorenzo Cairó. He later studied at the Schools of Arts and Crafts and Fine Arts in Barcelona, eventually furthering his education in Paris thanks to a scholarship from the Amigó Cuyás Foundation. He held his first solo exhibition in Barcelona in 1963, and since then has exhibited his work throughout Spain, in addition to participating in official competitions and exhibitions, where he was awarded third- and second-place medals at the National Exhibition in Madrid (1957 and 1960), at the Seville Autumn Exhibition on five occasions—including the Honorary Prize and the Gold Medal—and with the City of Barcelona Prize for Sculpture (1968), among other awards. Ricard Sala’s work is represented in the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern in Barcelona, the National Sculpture Museum in Valladolid, the Numismatic Museum in Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, Seville City Hall, the Las Palmas Island Council, the Regional Ministry of the Presidency of Castilla-La Mancha, and the Barcelona Provincial Council.
