DESCRIPTION
Based on early Flemish school models; Spain, 12th century.
Triptych.
Bone and wood.
Measurements: 56 x 48 x 4 cm (when open).
This 20th-century Spanish triptych, crafted following ancient Flemish school models, is a delicate devotional recreation inspired by the religious art of the Northern Renaissance. The composition, with a pointed format and hinged structure, features on the central panel a depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin, surrounded by angels and enveloped in an atmosphere of mystical ascension, while the side panels show angelic figures and saints in a contemplative pose. Executed with fine engraved and shaded lines on a bone surface, the work stands out for its meticulous drawing and carefully crafted border ornamentation, which reveal a taste for linear detail characteristic of the Flemish tradition. The work reveals a deep understanding of the techniques and compositions of 15th- and 16th-century religious art.
