Charles-Victor Prévot, Viscount d'Arlincourt (1788-1856), was a famous French novelist in the 1820s, when his fame came to rival that of Victor Hugo. After an initial career in the Napoleonic administration, he achieved literary notoriety with Le Solitaire (1821), a work that enjoyed extraordinary success despite harsh criticism for its exaggerated style and implausible plots.
A popular author among female audiences, he was often the target of ridicule for his vanity and literary affectation. Although he continued to publish novels, plays and political pamphlets, his prestige declined rapidly. He died still clinging to his desire for recognition, remembered more for his eccentric figure than for his literary legacy.
