Jean de La Fontaine was a French fabulist and poet, considered one of the most influential literary figures of the seventeenth century in France. He is best known for his Fables, which were a model for many later fabulists in Europe and spawned multiple alternative versions, both in French and in regional languages of France.
Despite having been the subject of prolonged reservations on the part of the monarchy, La Fontaine was finally admitted to the Académie Française. Since then, his prestige in France has not diminished. Proof of this are the numerous iconographic representations of the author, as well as his presence on medals, coins and postage stamps.
