Pierre Corneille was an outstanding French playwright, considered one of the three great playwrights of the seventeenth century along with Molière and Racine.
In his youth he obtained the valuable patronage of Cardinal Richelieu, who promoted a classical dramaturgy based on formal rules. Later, however, tensions arose between the two, especially as a result of his most famous work, El Cid, inspired by a medieval Spanish warrior, which was criticized by the newly created French Academy for not respecting the classical units of theater. Despite this, Corneille continued to produce highly acclaimed tragedies for almost four decades.
