DESCRIPTION
Pair of Louis XIV armchairs. France, 17th century.
Walnut wood and petit point upholstery.
Signs of wear. Slight damage to the wood and upholstery.
Measurements: 109 x 60 x 68 cm.
Pair of armchairs in the Louis XIV style and period. The design follows the forms and proportions of the High Baroque period in France. Featuring a tall, open walnut frame, with the seat and backrest upholstered in petit point. Characteristic elements of this style include the tall, slightly sloped backrest, as well as the profusely turned and molded legs and aprons. The four legs are joined by “H”-shaped crossbars, also carved with raised relief details. The only part where the wood remains smooth is the armrest, which is finished with a volute. The petit point upholstery features a medallion on the backrest depicting two masked figures inspired by the Commedia dell’Arte. Behind them, a row of houses is depicted. The rest of the upholstery consists of borders and floral motifs.
