This kussenkast from Gelderland (Netherlands) from the second third of the 17th century is a representative example of Dutch domestic furniture of the Modern Age, in which functionality is articulated with a formal language of marked structural sobriety. Executed in oak wood, with ebony and rosewood applications, the piece responds to a Dutch cabinetmaking tradition.
The design is organized around a clearly defined prismatic volume, emphasized by geometric panelled doors and a molded cornice of architectural character. The rhythmic arrangement of the panels, together with the presence of turned elements and punctual chromatic hallmarks, reveals an ornamental restraint typical of the Calvinist context, where material richness replaces decorative exuberance. The globular feet reinforce both the visual elevation of the piece of furniture and its link to regional typologies of northern Europe.
