This portrait is fully inscribed within the formal and symbolic conventions of the Dutch Baroque portrait, a genre that in those years reached a remarkable degree of technical and psychological sophistication. The painting presents a high-ranking officer, characterized by a confident bearing and an imposing presence, elements that respond to the social function of portraiture: to affirm the position, honor and respectability of the sitter in a context marked by wars and the consolidation of the power of the United Provinces.
The style of the Dutch school is manifested in the meticulous naturalism, evident in the representation of the fabrics, the satiny softness of the doublet, the meticulous lace of the collar and the vibrant red of the military sash, as well as in the attention to the lighting effects that gently model the face and hands. This naturalism, without reaching the tenebrist dramatism of other European schools, combines sober lighting with a remarkable descriptive precision, which allows the dignity and individuality of the character to be conveyed without falling into excessive idealization.
The genre of the military portrait in the Netherlands responded not only to a commemorative function, but also to the affirmation of the portrayed's status in a society in which military leadership was a key element of civic identity. In this work, the construction of that identity is observed through several visual codes: the hat adorned with feathers, the richly ornamented sword and the command staff, all unmistakable symbols of authority. Likewise, the background includes a scene with formed troops and a heraldic shield, elements that reinforce the official character and representative function of the painting.

The composition, in which the sitter dominates the foreground while the background organizes a context of collective action, establishes a subtle dialectic between the personal and the institutional, a characteristic feature of Dutch portraiture of the period.
