BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

European school following 17th-century models; 19th century.
“Still Life.”
Oil on canvas.
Shows signs of restoration.
Measurements: 87 x 127 cm; 104 x 140 cm (frame).
This composition is an example of the persistence of the Baroque still life tradition in 19th-century European painting. Created by an anonymous artist who follows the models developed during the 17th century, the work recaptures the visual richness, illusionism, and taste for abundance characteristic of Flemish and Dutch still lifes, reinterpreting them through a 19th-century sensibility. The scene features a table lavishly set with fruits, grapes, oysters, game, metal vessels, and glass objects, arranged in a composition of great visual complexity. A colorful parrot introduces an exotic touch and a marked sense of dynamism, while the lighting—with its pronounced chiaroscuro—directs the viewer’s gaze toward the various elements and enhances the tactile qualities of each surface: the pearlescent sheen of the shells, the transparency of the glass, the reflection of the metals, and the velvety texture of the fruits.
The work as a whole directly evokes the great still lifes of the Flemish and Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, in which the meticulous depiction of food and everyday objects transcended mere technical virtuosity.Although conceived in the 19th century, the work retains that same fascination with optical illusions and with painting’s ability to reproduce the qualities of materials with extraordinary precision.
